I’m going to voice out on the recent council elections. It could get a bit nasty / sensitive to whoever is involved depending on my mood. I’ll try to keep it as mild as possible. So if you can’t stand it, please leave, and if you are curious and want to read anyway, you’re welcome to. They say curiosity kills the cat, so don’t fucking complain.
Thanks.
I thought it was already bad enough in St nick’s but it’s even worse here. It seems pretty clear to me that Council is, and always has been, nothing but a popularity contest, or a comparison of who is richer. Deep down inside, you might deny it, but it is the cold hard truth on how you would vote for the Councillors:
And those are just some of the reasons.
Where is the democracy?
Apparently not here.
So basically, most of you don’t really care, which is kinda sad, as we think, are the Councillors we choose, really fit to be Councillors? Whatever happened to Capability? Whatever happened to whether what they say is sincere and from their heart? Whatever happened to putting up and act in an attempt to get the post?
Then we ask ourselves, what are Councillors for, anyway?
The clichéd view is that Councillors are there to serve the school, the student body. They are here to set a good example for all to follow. They are here to do the sai kang, as some might have mentioned.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against that.
But is there a deeper meaning to the world “Councillor”? What are they REALLY for, anyway?
I believe that Councillors are there to touch student’s lives and they must be capable of doing so. They are here not only to serve the school, but also to serve as an inspiration to all students. It shouldn’t be the case where they get voted in, and yet are incapable of doing all these things.
Let me state an example: The problem with alteration of uniforms.
Most would probably just ignore, some councillors would go with the flow and even break the rules, lastly, a small number would attempt to solve the problem with an iron fist or some reward system of some sort. Think. What if you were able to inspire your fellow schoolmates into believing that alteration of uniforms is all bullshit. What would you be able to achieve?
Thus, I believe that only a small number of the nominees are capable of being really able to grasp the concept of being a councillor, and able to deliver it through their actions effectively. Those are the people that really deserved to be called “Councillors” and I applaud them.
I only used 7 votes out of 10 in the end. But those that gained my honest vote was probably one or two nominees. The rest were all rather average… well they weren’t bad, but certainly were not up to standard. A few shouldn’t even be nominees at all, to be frank. I feel that there are those who are in council to “serve the school” actually just want to be part of Orientation and have fun with all the other activities. Council is more than that. There are those who try for council because they lack the talent for other CCAs. Council is more than that. Finally there are those who join Council for all the right reasons. Those are the ones worthy of being in Council.
So in conclusion, Councillors uphold the image of Council. With certain Councillors, Council seemed to have lost it’s true value and meaning.
It’s just… not Council anymore.
